Johan Turi’s first book Muitalus sámiid birra (An account of the Sámi), published in 1910, is often referred to as the first book in Sámi written by a Sámi. In 2010, a new edition of the North Sámi version was published at ČálliidLágádus Academia, as a way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this seminal work. The book, edited by Prof. Mikael Svonni, is based on the original manuscript.
Also, a new translation from North Sámi into English was recently published (Chicago, Nordic Studies Press, 2011). This version by Thomas A. DuBois is the first one translated directly from Turi’s original text in North Sámi, and the first one that does full justice to Turi’s work.
